Given my obsession with homemade bread lately, our science fair project has rolled right into daily life. Maya's operating question (with my help of course) is "Is Yeast Alive." So far we fed store bought yeast and watched it metabolize sugar into a gas that filled our balloons. We experimented with what yeast might like to eat best (frosted cake!), and today, we are baking our own bread with the yeast we trapped.
That's right, we're hunters. We caught ourselves some yeast. Today, we'll turn it into bread. I'm not sure how to work that into the science display just yet, but it has been fun and educational for both of us.
My education comes primarily in the form of appreciation for the Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day method, which makes the bread baking process so very much easier than baking bread from a starter.
Bread... or caramel rolls. The bagels have been outdone! These caramel rolls were easier than using frozen dough and significantly fluffier.
