Mind Games and an Unpredictable Third Baby

Baby, baby, baby..... that's all we're thinking over here. I'm officially at 39 weeks, so a week or two can still be expected.... except Elliot was two weeks early.... and I've been having semi-regular contractions since SUNDAY! That's FIVE DAYS. They're distracting, to say the least, and my oh-so-poetic attempt to close out every day as if a chapter was ending has now become an endless ritual of evening walks and questioning looks from Joe... and periodic debates over whether to call the doctor or not. They wax and wane, and when the time is right I'm sure we'll know. I'll know. Until then, it is difficult to think or talk about much else. It's difficult to plan for tomorrow, when any given night could be the night. The good news is, the bit of pre-labor I experienced with Elle made things relatively easy when we finally got to the hospital. Apparently this sort of early labor is fairly common with third or subsequent children! Who knew!! I'll just think of these distracting days as a good way to get some of the work done ahead of time without the stress and discomfort of the delivery room!

Off to walk.... and maybe bust out the yoga ball. Come on baby, the curiosity is driving us nuts... we're ready to meet you!

Elliot Takes the Field

Out of the shadow of her big sister, Elle can sometimes be timid. Shocking, I know, from such a brave, curious, assertive little girl. But without her sister, she seems a little untethered.

Until today. She took to her first soccer camp with the natural spunk she always has in our own backyard. Too bad big sister's class was canceled due to rain. They will be quite the pair!

At the End of Each Day

We celebrated Father's Day with pony rides at Bunker Hill. And a giant brunch. And meandering, bug-catching travels through a new park.

But it wasn't just for the sake of Father's Day. With Pip's arrival seemingly imminent (but possibly still 2 weeks away!), we have been trying to close out each day with a sense of fulfillment, as if to say, "And thus ends this chapter."

For example, yesterday Joe took the kids to a big outdoor pool, giving me some much-needed time to write, read, and nap. We took in a movie together, and we closed the day with waffles for dinner (topped with our seemingly endless supply of homegrown strawberries).

Seriously, looking back on the last week full of activity and family-bonding - even a couple of real date nights- it's clear that we've been writing the last paragraphs in this chapter before we embark on a whole new beginning with a whole new family member.

This frenzied writing of memories is not something we've embarked on purposefully. We're moved in part because we know how much life will slow down in the weeks to come... how limited our (particularly my) mobility will be as we settle into a newborn's unscheduled demands. And we've undertaken all of this even as I eagerly (almost obsessively) anticipate meeting this baby and look forward to time spent on the small, fleeting, beautiful tasks of caring for him.

So at the end of each day, Joe and I sit together and think, this has been wonderful - but we can't wait for this one last arrival!
